Very sad to hear the news of Sir Jack's passing. He truly was a 'great man,' and what a legacy he has left behind. I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Jack many times through the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, and he was always full of enthusiasm and ideas for improving things. There was never a time when he was not willing to meet young speakers and offer a word of advice if asked... and he got asked a lot! He was a big fan of Dale Carnegie, and I recall asking him about the famous author and what he had learned. He took a coin from his pocket with '3Cs' marked on it—to remind him of Carnegie's golden rule: 'Never condemn, complain, or criticise.' He lived by this motto. I vividly recall standing in the Mermaid Theatre in 2007, announcing Sir Jack's name, and a thousand teenagers standing up and chanting 'Jack, Jack, Jack' for 10 minutes. The pleasure he has given to so many young people—and their parents, guardians, friends, and family—is immense. Hundreds of thousands have had their lives changed and improved through speech, music, drama, and sport. Those teenagers who chanted his name will be among the many who are saddened today but also proud and grateful to have met Jack Petchey.
